7/12/2010

Local design and build team Shelter Alternatives, Inc. recently travelled to the 2010 Virginia Green Innovation Awards presented by the Virginia Sustainable Building Network, where they received recognition as the Best Green Business.

Ed Tuchler, president and owner of Shelter Alternatives, Inc. accepted the "Best Green Business" award as Virginia Sustainable Building Network celebrated their 15th Anniversary of promoting environmentally sound building practices at the University of Richmond Jepson Alumni center on June 29, 2010. The award acknowledges Shelter Alternatives' long term commitment to sustainability as custom home builders, and applauds recent efforts to adapt to changing markets with the creation of a new business, Energy Check, which provides home performance testing and energy retrofit contracting services.

Each year VSBN Members have the opportunity to nominate Green businesses, organizations, design firms, and community programs that represent "the best Green projects or programs in Virginia." This year our Green Innovation Award Jury included VSBN Board Members: Colin Arnold, LEED AP, Community Design Studio, LLC ; Patrick Farley, AIA, LEED AP, Watershed Architects; and Jerry Walker, LEED AP, Henrico County; and additional Green Building professionals: Rebekah Burke, Clark Nexsen; David Peabody, Peabody Architects; Alicia Zatcoff, City of Richmond; and Lindsay Snoddy, Albemarle County Public Schools.

For 21 years, Shelter Alternatives Inc. has provided creative designs and built solutions for clients in the New River Valley. Annette Osso, president of VSBN, noted that "this company was green long before the term became popular." In addition to focusing on building science, they incorporate many sustainable practices into their daily work methods in the office and engage in public outreach to educate the market about energy efficiency.

Shelter Alternatives, Inc. would like to thank VSBN for this opportunity to embrace our environmental actions, and to congratulate the City of Roanoke's Clean and Green Campaign, winners of VSBN's 2010 Most Sustainable Community Program.
